Weekly Summary - Three Championships, Two Runners-Up - Saturday, March 27, 2010

Onslow teams have rounded off the season with mixed performances saw championship victories to the Senior Women, 2D Originals and the 1B Kollapse. The Senior Reserves and 1B Rassics finished runners-up in their respective grades and the Senior Men dropped from third to fourth in the final week of the competition.

It was encouraging to see that the Senior Men, Senior Reserves and Senior Women each won the Twenty20 section of their respective competitions also.

The Senior men lost to Naenae with Jesse Ryder the difference in making 110 not out from just 67 balls. Ryder was dropped four times en-route to guiding Naenae to a victory which saw them leapfrog Onslow to finish 3rd with Onslow securing fourth place in the Pearce Cup for the second year running. A good effort considering that the team were without Firebirds Neal Parlane and Stew Rhodes for a long period of time throughout the season and suffered key-personnel losses in Scott Rasmussen and Kevin Forde who both departed Wellington as a result of job opportunities further north.

The Reserves tried to make a game of it against University, declared behind on the first innings to try and make a game of it. Unfortunately, University didn’t come to the party and were all out for 147, leaving Onslow a mammoth 193 from 36 overs on a very slow Nairnville Park. Despite a valiant effort, Onslow fell just short, finishing the day on 177-8 meaning a draw and first innings points to University. With other results going their way, Onslow retained 2nd-place in the grade while University were never going to go up or down from their 6th placing. A frustrating end to a season that promised so much with valuable lessons being learnt that will hopefully result in promotion after next season.

The Senior Women continued their dominance over Johnsonville, recording another win and finished the year with a sixth consecutive championship going through the season losing just one Twenty20 game.

The 2A team recovered from a first-innings deficit to set Eastern Suburbs a competitive target but unfortunately lost with two overs left in the day. Matt Patterson was yet again the best of the Onslow batters with wickets shared around.

The 2D originals batted out for a draw in the championship decider against Collegians and secured yet another 2D grade championship for the Onslow Cricket Club.

The 1B Kollapse had a win and the 1B Rassics lost their games on Saturday meaning that both teams finished at the top of the table in the grade, a great effort.

Finally, the 1A Stags finished with a win in final game but with a bit of fun in the process with all players getting two overs of spin at the crease. Wicketkeeper Rohan Eades was the pick of the bowlers, claiming 3-13 including a hat-trick.

Statistics for the season have been updated for those teams that have are up to date with their score sheets. Career statistics will be updated once all team stats for the season have been received.

Onslow Secure Three Grade Wins - Sunday, March 14, 2010

Due to the final match in the Blackcaps-Australia ODI series taking place at the Stadium on Saturday, all club cricket was played on Sunday.

Just two Saturday’s remain in the season and Onslow appears to have secured grade victories in the Senior Women, 2D and 1B grades.

The 1stXI resumed their first innings against North City with Harsh Tataria and Rhys Morgan seeing the team total past 500. Onslow eventually declared their innings closed at 518-9. The 2ndXI leaked runs and gave up first innings points in their match against Johnsonville who made 226 all out, a lead of 76. Despite resistance from Scott Mataira who made 34, Onslow were reeling at 99 for 7 after 26 overs of their second innings, a lead of just 23 and with 59 left to play, the match was Johnsonville’s for the taking with an early finish on the cards. However, Beppo Wallace (61) and Jared Zivkovic (33) shared in a stubborn 86-run partnership in 42 overs to save the day. Onslow were eventually dismissed for 196 leaving Johnsonville with 120 runs to win in 14 overs.

After Johnsonville off to a good start where 22-runs were taken from the first two overs, but with  wickets falling at regular intervals, Johnsonville’s attacking chase soon turned to one of survival, ending up on 76-7. Callum McLean bounced back from a poor effort in the final stages of Johnsonville’s first innings to finish with career-best figures of 6-34 from seven overs.

The Senior Women crushed Hutt-Taita in a two-day match. In reply to Onslow 384-7, Hutt resumed the day on 87-2 but soon capitulated to be 123 all out with Renee Moffit being the pick of the bowlers with 5-41. Onslow enforced the follow-on with Hutt fairing marginally better in the second innings to be 163 all out, losing by an innings and 98 runs. Batting first, Collegians could only muster 61 with Susie McDonald (3-5), Renee Moffitt (3-14) and Amanda Cooper (3-15) sharing the wickets. Weekly Summary - Four Defaults! - Saturday, February 13, 2010

After rain on Thursday and Friday it was somewhat surprising that cricket got underway in Wellington on Saturday with the exception of a few games in the Hutt Valley where heavier rain had fallen.

The top two teams were scheduled to play a two-day over Saturday and Sunday whilst lower grades played a one-day round on Saturday while there was no action for the Senior Women, 2A Men and the 1B Kollapse with the their opposition defaulting. In addition, the 2D Shake N Bake team lost their match by default which brought the total number of defaults to four out of the nine teams at Onslow meaning that some teams will have gone over a month without playing any cricket.

The 2ndXI’s title chase suffered a big blow after they were unable to play at Wainuiomata on Saturday because the pitch was left uncovered and had become waterlogged. Things improved on the second day with a delayed start required to help the pitch dry out. Onslow won the crucial toss and elected to bowl first, dismissing Wainuiomata for just 47 runs. Beppo Wallace was the standout with the ball, taking 7-13.

Onslow declared soon after earning first-innings points but were unable to make any inroads into the Wainuiomata resistance who ended the day at 154-5 from 50 overs. Overall, it was a disappointing weekend for the 2ndXI with only 90 overs possible and the opportunity for an outright victory taken away from them. With competition-leaders Petone achieving an outright victory over the weekend, Onslow remains in second place, 8 points behind.

The 2D Men and 1A Raging stags enjoyed comfortable victories with Cam Small returning to action by taking 6-21 with the ball.

Weekly Summary - Sunshine and then rain - Saturday, January 30, 2010

Sunshine bathed the capital and after a two-week absence courtesy of rain, cricket made a return with Onslow’s top two sides in action on Saturday while lower grades have been moved to Sunday for the next two weekends as a result of the Wellington Cup and Rugby Sevens.

The Senior Men took on University at Kelburn and were asked to field first in their two day match. After Onslow made early in-roads, the students recovered and at one stage were 201-5 before being bowled out for 245 with a six-wicket haul for Stewart Rhodes earning him a fourth appearance on the club honours board.

In reply, Onslow were well placed at 117-2 after 23 overs when stumps were drawn. Firebird Neal Parlane has continued his domestic Twenty20 form with an unbeaten 76 accounting for the majority of Onslow’s tally

The 2ndXI team is well positioned at stumps in their two-day match against North City at Nairnville Park.

North City, who won the toss and elected to bat first, made a steady start before losing three quick wickets to the bowling of Jared Zivkovic (2-20) and Guy Bidwell (1-5). At lunch, the North’s had recovered to 80-3 on a pitch not offering a lot to the bowlers.

Following the interval, Onslow, led by newcomer Scott Archer (5-53), took control of the match and dismissed North City for 170 in 58 overs.

With 42 overs remaining in the day, Onslow openers Finlay Scott and Alex Howarth began cautiously before a burst by Scott saw the North City attack dispatched to all parts of the ground and the score surge from 28 after 10 overs to 135 in the 27th over at which point Scott was stumped on 76. Howarth continued the scoring spree to bring up his first half-century for Onslow, making 62 before being dismissed.

As the overs remaining counted down, Onslow ensured the runs scoring continued with quick-fire cameos from Misty Jones-Middleton (34), Guy Bidwell (17), Sam Lawson (16) and Scott Archer (17) to finish at 226-6 at stumps, an overall lead of 56 runs which could prove valuable with the recent run of inclement weather in the capital interrupting matches and preventing results.

Due to the Wellington Cup and the Rugby Sevens proving a popular draw card, all grades 2A and below were scheduled to play fixtures on Sundays to allow cricketers the best of both worlds.

Unfortunately, Saturday’s sunshine was replaced by cloud, rain and southerlies which forced the cancellation of lower cricket for the third consecutive week.

Whilst cricket was definitely not the winner, the 1B Kollapse and Senior Women were defaulted to on Friday and banked the points prior to the cancellations

Weekly Summary - Wash Out - Saturday, January 23, 2010

Yet another rained out weekend of cricket in Wellington with no play possible across all grades in Wellington.

Weekly Summary - Rain Back Again! - Saturday, January 16, 2010

Rain and cold southerlies prevented any play in Wellington with the poor run of weather this season continuing to frustrate club cricketers and administrators as the seventh Saturday of the season was washed out.

The only Onslow Club members in action during the past week have been Neal Parlane who scored 80 runs for the Wellington Firebirds in a Twenty20 match against the Auckland Aces on Wednesday and Sam Keegan who is in Gisborne representing Wellington at the National Under-17 tournament. Keegan has taken several catches and scored 25 runs in the win against Central Districts and 35 in the washed out match against Otago.

With no play being possible on Saturday, all grades will play one-day rounds next week.

Weekly Summary - Tight Victories in final round of year - Saturday, December 19, 2009

Saturday saw pattern of bad weather on Saturdays return again but it failed to spoil the party for the majority of Onslow sides who endured the wind, rain and plenty of nail-biting finishes. All grades below the Pearce Cup and Hazlett Trophy played a one-day round as a result of no play being possible last week. Overall two of the sides suffered losses; the 2nd XI, 2A's and 2D Originals sneaked home with one-wicket victories; the 1A Raging Stags managed an eight-wicket victory while the 1B Rassics, 1B Kollapse and Senior Women crushed their opposition with bonus point victories.

Cricket now takes a break over Christmas and New Year with the first round back in 2010 being Saturday, 9th of January.

The Onslow sides are well placed at the half way point in the season. Onslow is leading the Senior Women and 1B grades and our 2ndXI and 2D sides are a close second in their respective divisions also.

Here's hoping that the weather gods are kinder to the Wellington cricket fraternity as the first half of the season has been one marred by bad weather with six Saturday’s impacted by rain.

Onslow 59 all out & 63 all out lost to Eastern Suburbs 240-8 by an innings and 118 runs

Taita 127 all out (G Bidwell 4-29, J Zivkovic 3-26) lost to Onslow 128-9 (H Dobson 31) by one wicket

Thanks largely to Guy Bidwell (4-29) and Jared Zivkovic (3-26), the 2nd XI did well to restrict Taita to 127 all out in 36 overs. In reply, Onslow appeared to be coasting towards victory with the score at 90-5 with Hamish Dobson (31) leading the way. However, Onslow lost three quick wickets as the rain came down which made for an extremely tense finish before a 12-run stand for the last wicket between Callum McLean and Jared Zivkovic saw Onslow sneak home with one wicket in hand.

The 2ndXI head into the Christmas break placed second Senior 3 grade, one point behind Petone-Riverside who they face in the first two-dayer of 2010. Weekly Summary - All cricket below Pearce & Hazlett cancelled - Saturday, December 12, 2009

The cancellation means that all two-day games will now be played as one-dayers next Saturday, the last round before the Christmas Break.

Weekly Summary - Wins Galore! - Saturday, December 05, 2009

After a two week absence, the sun came out in full force and so did the Onslow Cricket sides with excellent results across the grades on Saturday.

The Senior Men 1st XI enjoyed two well-earned Twenty20 victories over bottom-placed University and leaders Eastern Suburbs. In their first match against University, Onslow batted first on a ‘sticky wicket’ which made runs hard to come-by for Onslow who were bowled out for just 97. In reply, Varsity threatened at times but Onslow, led by an excellent bowling and fielding display by Scott Rasmussen managed to hang on for a victory that was not without its tension. Varsity, requiring 10 runs from the final over bowled by Jimad Khan, finished tied with Onslow on 97 which forced an eliminator over scenario. Both teams nominated one bowler and three batsmen to decide the match. Onslow, won the crucial toss and elected to field first with Rasmussen and wicketkeeper Blair Parlane combining for two run-outs to restrict Varsity to just seven runs from their solitary over. In reply, Onslow achieved the target in four balls with Jimad Khan hitting the winning runs.

Following a short turn-around, Onslow then played competition leaders Eastern Suburbs. Batting first, Onslow improved to score 136 with Khan leading the way with 63 from 40 balls, sharing in a 99-run opening partnership with Andy Thompson who made 22. In reply, East’s were bowled out for 114, handing the victory to Onslow – the first time anyone in the current senior team has beaten the eight-time defending champions.

Across in Wainuiomata, the 2nd XI also enjoyed success in their two Twenty20 rounds. First up, Onslow enjoyed a comfortable victory over third-placed University with Thomas Vink (51), Finlay Scott (35) and Hamish Dobson (31) leading the way as Onslow scored 140 batting first. In reply, the University side finished up with 118-7 with Hamish Rowe (2-16) being the pick of the bowlers. The second match of the day was against Johnsonville, thought to be Onslow’s first big challenge of the season. Having lost the toss and being asked to bat, Onslow compiled 143-9, a very good effort considering the slowness of the outfield. Opening batsman Finlay Scott was impressive as he scored 78 runs which included three towering “sixes”.
Batting second, Johnsonville were never in the game as they lost wickets at regular intervals before being out for just 53. Opening bowler Hamish Rowe destroyed the top order in taking 3-11 with Guy Bidwell (4-12) and Scott Mataira (2-11) finished the job to destroy Johnsonville by 90 runs.

Elsewhere, despite the best efforts of Dave Gasson (50), the 2A’s suffered a loss to the University Stallions. The 2D Originals had a comfortable victory over Collegians who were bowled out for just 110 at Nairnville. Club Captain Greg Pike led the way in taking 3-10 off eight overs and in the process surpassed 400 wickets for the club. The economical Gideon Jack didn’t manage a wicket but conceded just nine runs from his allocated eight overs. Onslow’s run chase was comfortable with Mike Joel (52 not out) ensuring a six-wicket victory.  The 2D Shake N Bake side enjoyed a three wicket victory over Eastern Suburbs who were restricted to 166 thanks to the efforts of Ben Macalpine (4-22). Adam English (50 not out) top scored during Onslow’s run chase.

In the one-day grades, the 1A Raging Stags finished inside two hours, bowling out the University side for just 49 and winning comfortably by five wickets despite reversing their batting order. James McLeod (4-3) was the pick of the bowlers for Onslow. The 1B Rassics continued their unbeaten run this season, knocking over the Johnsonville Cripples for 128 and winning by four wickets. The 1B Kollapse side had a close win against Brooklyn. Batting first Onslow scored 162 with the opposition finishing up five runs short. Michael Canty led the way with both bat (38) and ball (3-16).

The Senior Women also played two Twenty20 matches. First up, Onslow beat Johnsonville who were restricted to 98, a total that Onslow overtook for the loss of four wickets. Next up were Hutt Districts who were bowled out for just 25 with Jess Bennett (4-13) and Laura Webster (3-9) doing the damage. In reply, Onslow achieved the target three wickets down.

The 1st and 2nd XI also played 50-over fixtures against University and Wainuiomata respectively. The 1st XI bowled tightly to restrict University to just 97 with Andy Thompson picking up three wickets and opening bowler Taylor Pentecost conceding just 13 runs from his ten overs.

In reply, Onslow, achieved their target for the loss of three wickets inside 25 overs, moments before the rain set in. The two wins over University has resulted in Onslow edging further away from the bottom-placed side by nine points.

The 2ndXI, led by Hamish Rowe (4-11) and Jake Bannatyne (3-2) restricted Wainuiomata to 97 but stumbled in their run chase to be all out for just 66. It was the first loss of the season.

Weekly Summary - Sunshine & grass pitches at last! - Saturday, November 07, 2009

Wellington
’s weather has behaved itself and allowed a full-round of cricket to be played with teams below the 3rdXI getting underway for the first time this season.

True to form this time of year, the ball dominated bat in most games with pitches either inconsistent in bounce, slow or offering seam assistance to the bowlers. The difficulties faced by the batsmen were probably best highlighted in the Pearce Cup game against Hutt Districts where Neal Parlane batted 30 overs to score 47 runs in his first turn at bat for the 1stXI this year.  Onslow’s total of 164-9 may have been low but Hutt Districts found the going just as tough, requiring 47 overs to hit the winnings runs. Liam Chrisp (3-21) was the pick of the Onslow bowlers.

The 2ndXI has continued its unbeaten run this season with an easy bonus point victory over Eastern Suburbs. Having won the toss, skipper Angus Cameron elected to bowl first with immediate success as Callum McLean struck in the first over of the game. Onslow applied the pressure from the outset and restricted East’s to 78 from 26.1 overs. McLean, who picked up career-best figures of 4-20 received good support from Guy Bidwell (3-21) and Harsh Tataria who troubled the East’s batsmen with 3-26 from 10 overs of spin.

Onslow reached their target in the 13th over with Guy Bidwell continuing his good early season form with an unbeaten 30. Bidwell has now scored 137 runs in three innings, two of which have been not-outs. Rhys Morgan (10*), who was at the crease when Bidwell hit the winning runs, has now passed 4000 career runs for the club.

Another club member approaching a milestone is Club Captain Greg Pike who is just two shy of 400 wickets. Pike picked up one wicket for the 2D originals on Saturday to bring his tally to a total of 398 career wickets. Also, Renee Moffitt is just three wickets shy of 100 career wickets.

Elsewhere, defending champions 2D "Shake n Bake" and both 1B sides achieved comfortable bonus point victories over their opposition whilst the 3rd XI and 2D Originals both struggled on what was reported to be two very average Nairnville Park decks. The 1A’s also suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Karori with Richard Maxwell scoring 40 runs and taking three wickets with the ball.

The Senior Women’s long unbeaten run in the 50-over competition has continued with a five wicket victory over Hutt Districts-Taita. Skipper Amanda Cooper led the way in taking 3-36 with the ball and scoring 50 runs with the bat whilst passing 1000 career runs in the process. Cooper's team mate Laura Webster reached the 50 wicket milestone on Saturday after claiming her tenth scalp of the season.

Next week, squad numbers will be significantly boosted with a number of university students returning back into Wellington. There is a continuation of 50-over matches for the 1st XI and 2nd XI men while 3rd XI & 2D will play commence two-day fixtures.

In representative news, Neal Parlane’s Wellington Firebirds open their Plunkett Shield campaign (four-day championship) with a match against the Canterbury Wizards at the , Allied Nationwide Finance Basin Reserve from Tuesday 10th November.

Weekly Summary - Maiden ton for Burgess - Saturday, October 31, 2009

It’s a case of de ja vu yet again – poor weather in recent weeks meant that grass pitches were not ready for cricket at all levels meaning that intercity grades had to be transferred onto artificial wickets and the start for most lower grade cricket postponed for a week.

The 1st XI and 3rdXI suffered heavy defeats to Taita and Victoria University respectively while the 2nd XI and Senior Women both picked up bonus point victories.

The personal highlight of the week goes to Steve Burgess from the 2A side who scored his maiden century whilst opening the batting. Burgess’ score of 105 was not enough to secure victory in their season opener against the Victoria University Tamils but was special given that he usually bats at number 11 for the side! Onslow’s answer to Mark Richardson perhaps?

Also, Matt Patterson (2nd XI) picked up four wickets and in the process reached 200 career wickets for the club. Patterson has already scored 4000 club runs.

1st XI vs Taita (Lost)

Onslow 105 all out lost to Taita 106-3 by seven wickets.

2nd XI vs Petone-Riverside (Won)

Onslow 252-9 (G Bidwell 59, A Cameron 40, M Patterson 31, M Weston 21) beat Petone Riverside 132 all out (M Patterson 4-44, G Bidwell 3-40, C McLean 1-9, K Jacobs 1-15, M Matuszewski 1-19) by 120 runs (bonus point victory)

3rd XI vs Victoria University Tamils (Lost)

University 305 all out (I Sos 3-57) beat Onslow 192 (S Burgess 105, T Pointer 30) by 113 runs

Senior Women vs Wellington Collegians (Won)

Onslow 161 all out (J McFadyen 36, A Cooper 32, C Mizzie 23, M Chapman 20) beat Collegians 94 all out (L Webster 3-24, A Cooper 2-20) by 57 runs (bonus point victory)

2ndXI Crush Petone-Riverside by 120 runs - Saturday, October 31, 2009

Onslow 252-9 (G Bidwell 59, A Cameron 40, M Patterson 31, M Weston 21) beat Petone Riverside 132 all out (M Patterson 4-44, G Bidwell 3-40, C McLean 1-9, K Jacobs 1-15, M Matuszewski 1-19) by 120 runs (bonus point victory)

The Onslow 2ndXI continued their good start to the season with a crushing 120 run victory over Petone Riverside in a 50-over match on Saturday.

Having lost the toss and being asked to bat first, Onslow got off to a flyer with openers Mitch Weston (21) and Jono Singh (19) scoring at six runs per over. The aggressive start laid a good platform for Guy Bidwell (59) and skipper Angus Cameron (40) to continue the run scoring with Bidwell at his aggressive best having already passed 100 runs in two innings this season. Cameron held the innings together while two quick wickets fell in the middle, allowing the tail, led by Matt Patterson (31) to finish strongly as Onslow finished up on 252-9. The score appeared to be on-par with what was required. though it could be said that some Onslow batters let themselves down with poor shot selection as four batters needlessly ‘skied’ catches to give their wickets away cheaply.

Onslow’s defense couldn’t have started any better with West Indian Kentish Jacobs picking up a wicket with the first ball of the Petone innings. Rocked by the early set back, Petone’s innings never got under way thanks to tight bowling from Callum McLean (1-9) with Guy Bidwell (3-40) and man-of-the-match Matt Patterson (4-44) working their way through Petone’s middle and lower order.

While quiet in some patches, Onslow fielded well, backing up the bowlers with excellent catches to Mitch Weston, who at fly slip, removed Petone’s danger man Scott Bonner off the bowling off Patterson for 27. At this point, Petone were 78 for 4 and it signaled a start of a collapse which saw three further wickets fall for the addition of just 12 runs. The catch of the match however was made by Kentish Jacobs who displayed “Caribbean Flair” by running to his left and diving backwards from mid-off to take a stunning catch at full stretch off Guy Bidwell.

Following relegation from Senior 2 last season, the 2ndXI is travelling well early on and will be receiving a further boost over the coming weeks with a number of squad members returning from overseas travel and university commitments.

Next week, the 2ndXI take on Eastern Suburbs in a one-day match where it is hoped that more of the same form continues.

Weekly Summary: College Players Shine - Monday, October 26, 2009

Following the cancellation of the first two rounds, it was great to see the rain stay away and the sun emerge with double-headers played out by our 1st & 2nd XI men’s sides and the Senior Women.

The men will be disappointed after failing to defend 150 against Eastern Suburbs who were struggling at 10-3 early on in their run chase. Skipper Glynn Howell top-scored with 39 while Scott Rasmussen was the pick of the bowlers with 2-25. It was pleasing to see the side bounce back the following day as they beat North City in a Twenty20 match.

The 2ndXI men side’s 50-over match against Taita was abandoned due to a wet and ‘boggy’ outfield at Churton Park preventing play from getting under way. However, the side did open their season with a victory over Easts in their Twenty20 match.

From a club development perspective, it was extremely pleasing to see three schoolboys turn out for the top two sides in Twenty20 games on Sunday.

Aotea College wicketkeeper Sam Keegan who at 15 years of age, became the youngest player to make his first-team debut for the club. Keegan push has relegated ex-international Gavin Larsen to second on the list and Rhys Morgan down to third. For the 2ndXI, Wellington College fourth-former Kieran Butler turned in a superb performance in taking 3-23 with the ball and will no doubt feature in the 1stXI sometime in the near future. Another college player to feature was Onslow 7th former Jared Zivkovic who bowled tightly for the 2ndXI and the team eagerly await having him permanently in the side after his College commitments end in December.

Also featuring during the course of the weekend was Taylor Pentecost, a former Wellington Under-19 representative bowler who is in his second year out of Rongotai College. Pentecost has joined Onslow after previously playing for Eastern Suburbs and made his 1st XI debut on Saturday.

Other players to debut were Andy Thompson (1stXI) from Northern Districts and Kentish Jacobs (2ndXI), a bowling all-rounder from St. Vincent (West Indies) who has been sponsored by the SVG Sports Ministry  to travel and learn cricket abroad.

From the young and new, to the old and established, congratulations to club-stalwart Andy Wilson who turned out for the 2ndXI on Sunday and surpassed 13,000 career runs. Andy still showed he can foot it with the youngster’s with two ‘signature’ sixes lofted over mid-wicket and remains second on the all-time career run scorers behind Club President Denis Lander

The Senior Women began their quest for a sixth consecutive championship with a comfortable victory over Johnsonville in their opening 50-over match. Batting first, Johnsonville were restricted to just 76 with Laura Webster (3-18) and Renee Moffit (2-10) the pick of the bowler. In reply, Jess McFadyen top scored with an unbeaten 23 as Onslow reached their target for the loss of four wickets.

In their Twenty20 match against Taita-Hutt Districts, Onslow’s 101-3 was not enough with the opposition winning by three wickets. McFadyen was again the pick of the batters in scoring 39 while Char Mizzi contributed 27. Renne Moffit took 2-14 with the ball. Onslow then bounced back to comfortably beat Collegians by 40 runs in their second match of the day.

Next week, matches are scheduled to be played on grass and lower-grade cricket is set to commence however, given the state of the grounds played on during this weekend things could yet change.

2ndXI open season with Twenty20 victory over East's - Sunday, October 25, 2009

Scorecard: Onslow 120-5 (G Bidwell 48*, A Wilson 28, T Vink 18) beat Eastern Suburbs 117-9 (G Bidwell 3-20, K Butler 3-23, K Jacobs 1-20) by three runs.

After the opening two Twenty20 rounds were cancelled, and yesterday’s 50-over match abandoned, the Onslow 2nd XI were all smiles following their opening 3-run victory over Eastern Suburbs in a Twenty20 match at Adventure Park.

Onslow skipper Angus Cameron won the toss and elected to bat first. Onslow soon found themselves in trouble after losing Mitch Weston in the first over of the innings but Tom Vink (18) and Guy Bidwell (48 not out) combined for a 50-run partnership. Man-of-the-match Bidwell batted superbly with a mixture of big hitting and working the ball around for singles. With Vink’s departure at 56-2 in the 10th over, Bidwell was joined at the crease by Andy Wilson (28) and the pair further lifted the run-rate. Andy still showed he can foot it with the youngster’s with two ‘signature’ sixes lofted over mid-wicket and in the process brought up his 13,000th run for the club. Following Wilson’s departure with the score at 102-3 in the 16th over, Onslow failed to capitalise on what was a strong position, managing just 18 runs off the final five overs to finish on 120-5 at the close of the innings.

In reply, East’s were reeling at 36-5 in the 10th over with Guy Bidwell (3-20) and Wellington College fourth-former Kieran Butler (3-23) ripping through the opposition’s top order which all but ensured victory for Onslow. However, East’s opener Wilkinson (48 not out) had other ideas and the match ended up going down to the wire with any loose bowling being dispatched to the boundary.

With East’s 87-7 in the 17th over, 34-runs were needed from the final three overs with the advantage held by Onslow.  However, anything can happen in Twenty20 as 15-runs were conceded off Butler’s 3rd over and with a further nine runs from the penultimate over bowled by Jared Zivkovic, it was game-on again. Heading into the final over, East’s required 10 runs for victory but young Butler proved a match-winner, bowling tightly and not conceding a boundary, allowing Onslow to breather a sigh of relief in what should have been a more comfortable win.

Overall, a winning start is not one to complain about with the side showing a lot of promise in what is hoped to be a successful season as the quest for promotion back to Senior 2 continues. In particular, the two schoolboys (Kieran Butler and Jared Zivkovic) proved that they are up to the grade which can only be a good thing for the future of Onslow cricket.
