The Onslow Junior Cricket Club caters to primary and intermediate age school children. There are three levels of cricket provided.

Have-a-Go

The Have a Go programme gives younger children (generally school year 0 & 1) the opportunity to develop and practice cricket skills in a fun environment on Saturday mornings during the playing season.

Soft Ball Grades

The soft ball grades are for children in school years 2 to 4, boys and girls.

The games are played with a junior sized soft ball such as an Incrediball, so no protective gear is required. To encourage full participation, all players must bowl and bat, and in the starter grades (Year 2 and Year 3) batsmen cannot be ‘out’ but instead have runs deducted from their side, with everyone generally batting 4 overs.

Hard Ball Grades

The hard ball grades are for children in year 5 onwards, boys and girls, with an option for girls to play in the girls only grade.

The games are played with the smaller 142g cricket ball. Protective gear is worn by batsmen and wicket keepers. Many players choose to use their own equipment, but the club also provides each team with gear.

Club Philosophy

The main aim is for every player, regardless of ability, to have an enjoyable cricketing experience, ensuring that they are well set up for the future if they want to carry on with the game.

There are opportunities for players to be selected in top teams to represent the club in local competitions, and the club is a strong supporter of the January Hawke’s Bay cricket camps which provide cricketers with an intensive, highly competitive cricketing experience.

The focus is on getting the players familiar with cricket, with an emphasis on enjoyment of the game – whilst still recognizing that it is more fun when you win!

The 2011-2012 season

The 2011-2012 season runs from Saturday 29 October 2011 to Saturday 17 December 2011 and from Saturday 28 January 2012 to Saturday 31 March 2012. Most games start at 8.30am and are held at various grounds throughout the Wellington area, but in order to fully utilise the new artificial surfaces, some games will be held at other times.  Have-a-Go starts at 9am and is held at Ngaio School.
